Post Race

Wow. That's all I can say.  My first half marathon was a success.

It was a beautiful morning here in DC. The weather was perfect: crisp and cool at 55 degrees but warmed up shortly after. I got up at 6:00, made coffee, had a banana, an egg and turkey bacon sandwich. I changed into my running gear after eating and decided to leave at 7:00 a.m. in case we had subway breakdowns and whatnot. There was quite a wait at one of the stops but I finally made it to my corral by 7:45.

The race began at 8:00 but since I was at corral #22, there was about 25 minute wait before our group could head out so my start time was at 8:25. Meanwhile, I rushed of to use the toilet since I suddenly had to go. It must have been the coffee I had this morning.

The crowd wore lots of green in honor of St. Patrick's Day. There were all types of runners: young, old, heavy, skinny, tall, short so it was nice to see that. I was nervous at first when I realized I shouldn't  since I've been busting my bum the past 12 weeks training for this thing.  There were 25,000 runners registered and it was really cool to be a part of this large group of runners.

As for this race course, DC is pretty flat but for some reason this group managed to find many hills which probably slowed me some and I rarely train on hills. I guess I'll have to Hill train for next year and see if I can beat my time. What? There's gonna be a next year? LOL!!

All this training finally paid off with my finish time of 2 hours and 8 minute which is a pace of 9 min 45 sec. (and accrued 20 APs too) I had to use my watch since we won't get final official finish times until after 7:00 p.m. tonight. I'm very pleased with myself and to think that at one time I thought I could never do any kind of race. Anything is possible they say. And "they" were right.

Until next time...

  1. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
What an accomplishment Nancy! I feel proud of you if that makes any sense because I know firsthand how hard trying to become a runner with endurance is! (Although its getting easier and easier).
Way to go...I have a lot of work to do if I am to join you one day! ;)
